The Foundation – An Introduction from the Clerk

David Cooke, Clerk

Christ's Hospital has existed for over 450 years to provide a first class education for needy children. Christ's Hospital comprises two major elements. The School which delivers the first class education, and the Foundation which provides the means for the School to do so. School and Foundation are completely interdependent, and enjoy a very close working relationship. Their common objective is to enable the School's pupils to realise their maximum potential and leave Christ's Hospital fully prepared to embrace life and make the most of all of its opportunities.

The Foundation, situated on the School's campus, generates the funding for over 80% of the annual costs of educating 830 children at Christ's Hospital School. It maintains its infrastructure, not least the buildings, and develops and implements the strategic plan, as well as providing considerable administrative support.

Over the centuries, the generosity of benefactors has built up an endowment that enables Christ's Hospital to continue its philanthropic mission to a far greater extent than any other independent school in the UK. CH is undoubtedly very well endowed but our commitments, including subsidising more than 90% of the pupils, significantly exceed our assets. It is a constant challenge, particularly in these difficult economic times, to continue to generate sufficient income from the Endowment to meet the many essential demands placed upon it, but the Foundation is determined to continue to enable the School to meet the original mission of providing an outstanding education to needy children.
