Donation Governorships

Becoming a Donation Governor - A Gift for a Lifetime

Donation Governorships are an initiative particular to Christ's Hospital and have been in existence for hundreds of years.

Anyone who makes an unconditional donation of at least £18,000 towards pupils' education can become a Donation Governor (or with Gift Aid the gift can be made net of tax, ie £14,400). Over the next two years this minimum donation will be increased to reflect the actual cost of one year's worth of education at Christ's Hospital. From 1st September 2012, the minimum will be £21,000 (or £16,800 net of tax with Gift Aid).

Given the actual cost of educating a child is £25,000 per annum we would hope that donors might consider giving over and above the minimum qualifying donation value.

Gifts can be made in a single donation or payments can be spread out over a maximum period of five years.

Donation Governor and presenteesDonation Governors' support is recognised by their election to the Court of Governors, which provides an opportunity to learn more about CH, its plans for the future and how it structures and manages its pastoral activities.

The most rewarding part of being a Donation Governor is the privilege of identifying a child who is facing social or financial need, and nominating or "presenting" them to the School. This may be a child known to the Governor or a child recommended by our Admissions Registrar. Donation Governors can "present" a child in Year 7, Year 9 and for Year 12 (Sixth Form); in all cases, the child must pass the school's entrance exam and requirements.

Governors choose how much involvement they wish to have with their Presentee. This could include attending concerts, fixtures, and School events as well as meeting their Presentee's family and acting as a mentor. Research has consistently shown that children's education and development benefits significantly from having the involvement of an interested adult.

Donation Governorships – Partnerships amongst Friends

If for some reason a donor feels unable to fulfil the role of Donation Governor (for example due to geographical distance) it is possible for them to nominate a friend to take on the active mentoring role on their behalf. Alternatively, the Development Office could introduce you to others seeking partnership; for example uniting a younger donor and an older donor, with the younger donor taking on the role of mentor.

Equally, we have collective partnership Donation Governorships, a recent example being of an Old Blue who has joined forces with friends (non-Old Blues) and are clubbing together over three years to present a child to CH. For further details on collective partnerships click here.

"This has been very rewarding for me and the whole family. All giving is unconditional but you can see the benefit of such giving before your very eyes."
